The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has appealed to border communities to support its operations by providing credible intelligence to help combat smuggling and related cross-border crimes.
The call was made by Comptroller Godwin Otunla, Area Controller of the Ogun 1 Command, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Idiroko, Ogun State.
Community Support Crucial
Otunla stressed that the fight against smuggling is a collective responsibility and requires active collaboration between security agencies and residents of border communities.
“The Ogun 1 Area Command will continue to build on collaboration, intelligence sharing, and innovation in tackling smuggling. However, I want to sound a clear warning to smugglers and their collaborators to refrain from all illegal businesses because the command will not relent in the fight against smuggling,” he said.
Zero Tolerance for Smuggling
The Comptroller reaffirmed that his officers remain vigilant and committed to defeating smuggling networks.
“We remain resolute and unyielding. No matter the sophistication of your tricks, our personnel will continue to thwart your antics and bring the full weight of the law against you,” Otunla warned.
Cooperation with Security Agencies
Otunla also commended the role of sister security agencies in supporting Customs operations across the Ogun border corridor. He said their cooperation has been instrumental in the successes recorded so far against smugglers.
The Customs boss assured that the Ogun 1 Area Command will sustain joint operations and intelligence-driven strategies to further protect Nigeria’s borders.
