Emmynet24 News Media --Katsina State Police Command has commenced enforcement of a state government directive imposing a 24-hour curfew on Dutsinma Local Government Area and a 7pm to 7am curfew across the remaining 33 local government areas.
Abubakar Sadiq, the state Police Public Relations Officer, issued a statement on Friday explaining the necessity of these measures following violent outbreaks during nationwide protests that began on Thursday.
"The 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area is necessary to ensure public safety and prevent further escalation of violence, vandalism, and looting of public and private properties," Sadiq said. "The 7pm to 7am curfew in the rest of the state aims to prevent nocturnal criminal activities and maintain law and order throughout the state."
Sadiq noted that while no lives were lost during Thursday’s protest, police have arrested around 50 individuals connected to the destruction and looting of government and public properties.
He urged parents and guardians to caution their children against engaging in unlawful activities, including violent protests, vandalism, and looting. He also called on youths to exercise restraint and avoid being manipulated into perpetuating violence.
The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, will conduct regular patrols to ensure compliance with the curfew. "Anyone found violating the curfew will be dealt with decisively," Sadiq warned.
The public is urged to cooperate with security agencies and remain indoors during curfew hours to help maintain peace and order in the state.
