Abuja, August 5— Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have detained Micheal Lenin, a prominent leader of the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in Abuja. Lenin was apprehended around 2 a.m. on Monday at his residence in the Apo area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, confirmed the arrest. According to Adenola, Lenin’s home was raided by the DSS, and he was reportedly assaulted during the operation. “Lenin has been arrested by the DSS. He was picked up during a raid on his house around 2 a.m.,” Adenola stated. “He was arrested and tortured in the presence of his family. We are demanding his immediate and unconditional release.”
Attempts to reach DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Lenin, who also serves as the National Coordinator for the Youth Rights Campaign, recently voiced his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s address regarding the protests. Speaking at a press briefing, Lenin described the President’s response as disconnected from the reality faced by Nigerians. “We wish to express our sadness and deep disappointment at the latest broadcast by President Tinubu, which is his first address to the nation on the #EndBadGovernance protests,” he said. “The President’s justification of state violence on protesters and journalists while dismissing our demands shows how out of touch he is with the masses.”
Lenin urged citizens to continue the protests on Monday, emphasizing the need for widespread participation. “We call on Nigerians to come out in large numbers to continue these protests until our demands are met,” he declared. “The two-pronged approach of violence and propaganda has failed. The repression and attempts to control us will not silence our voices.”
