A daring escape unfolded in Suleja, near Nigeria's capital, as torrential rain wreaked havoc on a medium-security prison, facilitating the flight of 119 inmates. Adamu Duza, the facility's spokesperson, revealed that the downpour demolished the perimeter wall and nearby structures, creating a gateway for the prisoners. Although ten escapees have been recaptured with the aid of security forces, a pursuit for the remaining fugitives is underway.

Addressing public concerns, Duza urged vigilance, emphasizing the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to authorities. The incident sheds light on Nigeria's persistent prison security challenges, attributed to overcrowding, underfunding, and outdated infrastructure. Recent years have witnessed multiple breakout episodes, including a notorious attack by the Islamic State in Abuja, resulting in the liberation of hundreds of detainees.

Acknowledging the systemic weaknesses, Duza highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize prison infrastructure, with plans for six new facilities boasting a collective capacity of 3,000 inmates. Despite the setback, authorities remain committed to enhancing security measures to prevent future breaches.
