A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Olufemi Oguntoyinbo, has expressed strong support for the plan by opposition parties to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, describing the move as crucial to Nigeria’s survival.
Oguntoyinbo made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
His comments follow a strategic meeting held on Saturday by key opposition figures in Ibadan, where leaders resolved to unite behind a single candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next presidential election.
Reacting to the development, Oguntoyinbo commended the leadership of opposition parties for what he described as a bold and timely decision. He noted that presenting a unified front would not only strengthen the opposition’s chances at the polls but also safeguard Nigeria’s democratic future.
According to him, the agreement to rally behind one candidate reflects a commitment by opposition leaders to put national interest above personal ambitions.
“The decision to field a single candidate is both wise and strategic. It has the potential to secure victory for the opposition and ultimately rescue Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.
He further emphasized that collaboration among opposition parties is essential, adding that the country’s democratic stability depends on their ability to work together ahead of the 2027 elections.
