The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reiterated its commitment to the pursuit of Biafra, declaring that the movement remains steadfast, united, and guided by faith as the new year begins.
In a New Year message addressed to Biafrans at home and in the diaspora, IPOB said the struggle for self-determination has never been easy but described sacrifice as an unavoidable price for genuine freedom.
“Freedom Demands Sacrifice”
The group stated that its agitation goes beyond what it called “flag independence,” stressing that it seeks freedom anchored on justice, dignity, and self-worth. According to the message, Biafrans were created as a free people and have a generational responsibility to preserve that heritage.
IPOB emphasised that hardship, pain, and perseverance have historically accompanied the liberation of oppressed peoples, adding that the current generation must uphold what it described as a sacred duty to future generations.
Tribute to Nnamdi Kanu
The statement praised IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, describing him as a symbol of sacrifice and fearless leadership. The group said Kanu’s continued detention has not weakened the movement but instead strengthened its resolve.
According to IPOB, attempts to undermine the agitation through what it described as misinformation and legal intimidation have failed, insisting that divine support remains central to the struggle.
Nigeria Described as “A Failed Experiment”
IPOB further criticised the Nigerian state, portraying it as a system that suppresses human potential and dignity. The group argued that multiple ethnic nationalities within Nigeria have been forced into conflict, poverty, and instability, while calling for a renewed sense of humanity among all peoples.
The organisation maintained that it harbours no hostility toward any ethnic group, stating that its opposition is directed solely at oppression and injustice.
Call for Unity Beyond Ethnicity
The group also acknowledged individuals from other ethnic backgrounds who have publicly supported its cause, noting that such actions demonstrated courage and conscience. IPOB said it remains open to alliances with all lovers of freedom, regardless of tribe, religion, or language.
Looking Ahead
Concluding the message, IPOB expressed hope that the new year would bring strength, healing, clarity, and renewed unity among its supporters. It reaffirmed confidence that the struggle would succeed in due time, not only for Biafrans but as a model of freedom across Africa.
The statement was signed by Emma Powerful, Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB.
