Nigeria will be without midfield anchor Wilfred Ndidi on Sunday when the Super Eagles face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final.
The Leicester City midfielder is suspended after receiving an early yellow card during Nigeria’s 4–1 victory over Gabon on Thursday.

Ndidi’s Suspension and Squad Impact

Ndidi’s absence is considered a significant blow to head coach Eric Chelle’s tactical setup, as the midfielder has been central to Nigeria’s defensive transitions and ball progression throughout the qualifiers.

However, the squad receives an important boost with the return of Semi Ajayi, who missed the semi-final due to card accumulation. Ajayi is now available for selection and expected to step into a key defensive role.

The crucial playoff will be held at the newly constructed Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the same venue where the Super Eagles overpowered Gabon.

Concerns Over Lookman’s Dip in Form

Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has raised concerns about the form of reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, following another subdued performance against Gabon.

Speaking on SuperSport, Ikpeba noted that Lookman appears to be struggling with consistency after transfer-related delays kept him out earlier in the season.

“I will like to see more from Lookman, we have not seen the Lookman of old,”
Ikpeba said.
“He’s short of match fitness and the form is not there yet. The likes of Chukwueze and Lookman, we need to see more from these two players.”

Lookman was substituted around the 60th minute, with Moses Simon coming on. Samuel Chukwueze also had a quiet display before being replaced by Chidera Ejuke.

High Stakes Ahead

Sunday’s match will determine whether Nigeria secures a place in the intercontinental playoffs, scheduled for March 2026. With Ndidi unavailable, the Super Eagles must adjust quickly as they prepare for one of their most critical fixtures in recent years.
