Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has offered a public apology following a physical altercation with social media critic Martins Otese, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), aboard an aircraft on Monday, November 17.

Naija News reports that the comedian addressed the incident in a video posted on his Instagram page, where he apologised to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), United Nigeria Airlines, Delta State governor Sheriff Oborevwori—whom he described as his “boss”—as well as his wife, children, other passengers, and Nigerians at large.

‘I Was Only Defending Myself’ — Mr Jollof

According to Mr Jollof, the fight began after VDM allegedly approached him on the aircraft and began making provocative and threatening remarks.

He claimed that VDM repeatedly said to him:

“If we come down from this plane, I go slap you. Make God punish your papa. I fit commot from here now come slap you.”

Mr Jollof said he initially responded by urging him to “behave yourself,” but the confrontation escalated when VDM reportedly moved closer to him.

“I was only defending myself. You guys saw what happened. I am very sorry if I delayed your appointments. This isn’t my kind of person; it will never happen again,” he said.

The comedian, who admitted to delivering what he jokingly described as “3000 mg” of blows during the scuffle, maintained that he acted in self-defence.

‘I Used What God Gave Me’ — On Biting VDM

Addressing viral claims that he bit VDM during the altercation, Mr Jollof compared his reaction to legendary boxer Mike Tyson’s infamous fight tactics.

“Mike Tyson the fighter, he used what God gave him. When you carry knife come gun battle, anything when you see you go take am,” he said, suggesting he reacted instinctively in the heat of the conflict.

Apology to Authorities and Family

In the video, Mr Jollof said the incident did not reflect his personality and promised it would not happen again.

“To my lovely wife, I know you’re proud of me. To my kids, I am sorry — Daddy will never do this again. To my boss, I am very sorry, this isn’t my kind of person,” he added.

As of press time, the NCAA has not issued an official statement on the incident. It is also unclear whether any formal complaints or investigations have been initiated.
