Former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Eddy Olafeso, has accused those behind the court order stopping the party’s upcoming national convention of working to undermine multiparty democracy and entrench a one-party state in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Olafeso described the Federal High Court’s restraining order against the PDP convention — earlier scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan — as “the climax of judicial rascality.”
“The restraining order from the Federal High Court today against our scheduled convention did not come as a shock to us,” he said. “A group is focused on ensuring that they destroy the party completely, but we will not allow it. Good will prevail over evil.”
‘They Want to Weaken the Opposition’
Olafeso alleged that the legal blockade was part of a coordinated attempt to destabilise the PDP and weaken opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“They have their agenda. It is not for the people. It is to entrench a one-party state, and that cannot occur well for our country,” he stated.
The former PDP vice chairman also accused some ex-party leaders of betrayal, claiming that individuals who gained national prominence through the PDP had now turned against it for personal gain.
“Many of them were unknown until they became governors. What baffles us is the level of their rebellion against the same party that brought them from obscurity to the limelight,” Olafeso said.
PDP Vows to Resist Political Sabotage
Despite the setback, Olafeso maintained that the PDP remains united and determined to proceed with its reform agenda.
“We will not allow this. I’m energised, like many of our colleagues, that this shall not stand. The truth and justice must prevail,” he said.
He added that the party would explore all legal options to overturn what he described as a politically motivated ruling.
“They made promises. Even Governor Sule Lamido said he would stay in the PDP and work for the coalition. Yet, some of them now openly support another party for the 2027 election,” Olafeso added.
As of press time, the PDP leadership had yet to officially announce whether it would appeal the court’s decision or reschedule the convention.
