Scores of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Tarai, Kibiya Local Government Area of Kano State have defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in a fresh wave of political realignment within the state.
The mass defection further consolidates the growing support base of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, as more grassroots politicians rally behind his administration’s development agenda.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, the defectors were led by the APC Woman Leader in Tarai, Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai.
Why They Left the APC
Explaining their decision, Hajiya Tarai said the group’s move was inspired by the “visible transformation” taking place across the state under Governor Yusuf’s leadership.
“We are impressed by the numerous projects executed by Governor Yusuf at both the local and state levels,” she said. “His inclusive leadership style has restored our confidence in the NNPP’s vision for Kano State.”
Government’s Reaction
Welcoming the defectors, the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Alhaji Adamu A. Kibiya, commended their decision and pledged that they would be fully integrated into the NNPP structure.
“You have taken the right decision by joining the NNPP, a party that prioritises the welfare of the people,” Kibiya said.
“I assure you that you will enjoy equal rights and opportunities like every other member. Let us work together to sustain the achievements of Governor Yusuf’s administration.”
The commissioner encouraged the new members to strengthen the party at the grassroots level and ensure the continuity of NNPP’s policies and programmes in the state.
More Defections Expected
The statement also hinted that additional APC members from neighbouring wards in Kibiya Local Government Area are expected to join the NNPP in the coming weeks as part of ongoing grassroots mobilisation efforts led by the ministry.
Background:
The NNPP has continued to attract defectors from rival political parties in Kano since Governor Yusuf assumed office, with analysts describing the trend as a sign of shifting political loyalties ahead of future elections.
