In Ibadan, Oyo State, tension is building as the city gears up for the much-anticipated national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). With the event scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, the atmosphere is charged amid fears of a major showdown between rival factions within the opposition party.

This year’s convention is shaping up to be one of the most contentious in the party’s history, following the decision of a key faction to pull out of the exercise entirely—a development that has deepened internal divisions and raised questions about the party’s future unity.


Eight years after the Anti-Torture Act of 2017 was enacted to end police brutality, the law remains largely unenforced. Across police cells and detention centres, citizens are routinely dehumanised by unscrupulous state agents without adequate rebuke from the authorities. As the use of torture to extract confessional statements proliferates, there is a compelling need to end the brazen violation of human rights and impunity, which looms larger by the day.


The Federal Government has rejected claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria, describing the allegation as false and damaging to the country’s image. While the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, demanded the full and unedited airing of his recent interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, saying selective editing could distort Nigeria’s image and fuel “misleading narratives and allegations of religious persecution.,’’ his counterpart in Information and National Orientation Ministry, Mohammed Idris, said there was guaranteed religious freedom in Nigeria.


Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to set up a national caretaker committee instead of organising a controversial National Convention that will compound the division in the party. He said the proposed caretaker committee should instantly embark on reconciliation and unite the platform.


A 75-year-old man, Julius Ekundayo Omololu, who has lived with diabetes for 20 years, has shared his pain, resilience, and the lessons he has learned while managing his condition as the global community marks World Diabetes Day today. The theme for this year is; “Diabetes Across Life Stages.” In an interview with Daily Trust, the septuagenarian said he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2005.
