Veteran Nigerian musician Innocent Onyebuchi, popularly known as Daddy Fresh, has revealed that he has sold virtually all his possessions while battling a prolonged illness that has left him bedridden for over two years.
The Ajegunle-born artiste made the revelation in a video shared on Wednesday by filmmaker Kunle Afod, who paid him a surprise visit at a medical facility.
In the emotional footage posted on Afod’s verified Facebook page, Daddy Fresh was seen lying weakly on a hospital bed, struggling to speak. The filmmaker captioned the clip: “Daddy Fresh must not die. One of Nigeria’s finest artistes is in a terrible condition.”
Visibly shocked to see the filmmaker, the ailing singer said faintly,
“Na lie, how you take know say I dey here? You’re the last person I could think of. I was wondering if I was hallucinating again.”
“My Kidney, Liver, Eyes Are Failing”
Speaking about his health struggles, the Elerugbe Erue crooner disclosed that he has been diagnosed with multiple complications.
“My kidney, my liver, neuropathy. Eyes — two of them get issues. I don operate on this one, e no dey see again. I no dey see you,” he said.
He added that his blood level had dropped to 25 per cent and that he currently depends on blood transfusions.
“If I stand up here now, I go fall except somebody hold me. See my face, my knees — wounds because of falling like a child learning to walk,” he explained.
Facing Eviction Amid Illness
Daddy Fresh further lamented that he may soon be evicted from his home over unpaid rent.
“I have a few days in my house because of the rent. I have to move on to where I don’t know,” he said sorrowfully.
Despite his health and financial troubles, the singer expressed gratitude to Afod, saying the visit rekindled his hope.
The filmmaker, who offered him some financial support and promised to return, called on Nigerians and the entertainment industry to rally around the veteran artiste during his time of need.
“Daddy Fresh has contributed immensely to Nigerian music. He deserves our collective support,” Afod urged.
