According to an internal memo, the government has invited top ASUU negotiators to a two-day meeting scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 24–25, aimed at finally concluding the long-delayed renegotiation process.
In a communiqué signed by Comrade Jangfa Timothy Zhimwang, Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University of Lafia chapter, the union confirmed that it will honour the invitation but criticised the timing, describing it as coming “very late.”
The statement read:
“We will not spurn the invitation to dialogue as a responsible union. We shall await the outcome of the meeting before taking further action.”
ASUU reiterated that it remains committed to dialogue but will act strictly based on the resolutions of its National Executive Council (NEC). The memo noted that the NEC will convene immediately after the meeting to evaluate whatever proposal the Federal Government presents.
The NEC will then determine the union’s “next line of action,” signalling the possibility of fresh industrial action should the negotiations fail to meet expectations.
Comrade Zhimwang urged members to remain united and prepared.
“Members should remain calm, motivated, and fully prepared. Our unity remains our greatest strength,” he said.
The statement ended with ASUU’s familiar rallying cry: “The struggle continues…”
This is not the first time ASUU has set a deadline for the government. The union had earlier issued a one-month timeline for the renegotiation to be concluded.
Despite assurances from the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, who claimed the government has “literally met” several of ASUU’s demands, the union maintains that key issues remain unresolved.
ASUU’s major demands include the full renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, payment of withheld salaries, and the establishment of a sustainable and predictable funding model for Nigeria’s public universities.
