The newly elected National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ini Ememobong, has strongly condemned the violent confrontation that erupted at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, describing the incident as both shameful and deeply troubling for Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Tuesday, Ememobong said the fracas signaled a worrying deterioration in the country’s democratic culture. According to him, the disputed gathering that triggered the unrest raised serious questions about due process and internal party governance.

Ememobong expressed disappointment that Nigeria’s electoral cycle appears to worsen with each passing year, noting that violent political incidents place party members and ordinary citizens at unnecessary risk. He referenced past cases where Nigerians lost their lives as a result of tear gas inhalation during political unrest, accusing the ruling party of creating an environment that encourages hostility toward the opposition.

Questioning the legitimacy of the meeting that led to the standoff, the lawyer emphasized that every National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting must be monitored by INEC in accordance with democratic standards.

He said:

“Is that a NEC meeting? Every NEC meeting must be monitored by INEC. It is very shameful and a pity that this is happening after six election cycles. Democratic consolidation should be firm. Democratic norms should be valued. They should form part of our way of life. Sadly, every election cycle seems to be getting worse.”

Ememobong concluded by stressing the foundational principle of democracy—the majority should have their way while the minority must have their say. He accused certain minority interests within the party of attempting to impose their will on the majority, warning that such tendencies undermine internal democracy and national stability.
