The global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) strongly rejects and condemns the recent false and irresponsible comments credited to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, alleging that 30,000 people died in the South East as a result of IPOB or the peaceful activism of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
This claim is not only baseless but a deliberate attempt to distort facts, mislead the public, and shift responsibility away from those who have been in government since 2015—those who actually control the security agencies, military operations, and policy decisions that have shaped events in the South East.
1. IPOB Has Never Been Responsible for the Insecurity in the South East
The record is clear:
IPOB is a non-violent self-determination movement.
IPOB has never authorised any attack on civilians, security agents, communities, or institutions.
IPOB has consistently called for independent investigations into violence in the South East.
Yet, since 2015, the Federal Government has refused to allow independent, neutral, or international inquiries, even when human-rights organisations repeatedly raised concerns about:
Extrajudicial killings
Enforced disappearances
Torture
Secret detentions
The activities of unidentified armed groups
The refusal to permit independent investigations is itself proof that the government and certain political actors do not want the truth revealed.
2. The Insecurity Was Fueled by State-Sponsored Operations and Political Interests
Every credible observer knows that:
The violence in the South East escalated only after the military launched Operation Python Dance and other aggressive security operations targeting peaceful IPOB members.
Numerous reports by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and credible local NGOs documented the excessive and unlawful use of force by state security agencies.
Several “unknown gunmen” incidents occurred in areas with heavy security deployments, raising serious questions that the authorities have never answered.
Instead of addressing these realities, some politicians—including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu—prefer to weaponize insecurity narratives to attack IPOB for political gain.
IPOB has no hand in the killings or destruction in the East.
We challenge Senator Kalu to provide verifiable evidence for his 30,000-death claim.
3. Orji Uzor Kalu’s Comments Are Politically Motivated
It is public knowledge that Senator Kalu has, over the years, aligned himself with successive governments for political survival. His recent statements serve three purposes:
1. To curry favour with the current administration.
2. To distract from his ongoing legal challenges relating to corruption allegations.
3. To justify the persecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the continued attempt to delegitimise the Biafra movement.
His political history, actions, and alliances raise legitimate concerns about his objectivity and motives.
4. IPOB Is Not Responsible for Any Deaths or Destruction
For the avoidance of doubt:
IPOB has never authorised any violent activity in the South East.
IPOB has lost thousands of its own members to extrajudicial killings documented by reputable human-rights groups.
IPOB members have been arrested, tortured, detained, and in some cases found dead in mass graves.
The insecurity in the East is the direct result of failed security strategies, political interference, and unresolved grievances, not IPOB activism.
If Senator Kalu is confident in his claims, IPOB challenges him to support an:
Independent, internationally supervised inquiry into all violence in the South East since 2015.
We will gladly participate.
Will he do the same?
5. Misrepresenting Nnamdi Kanu Will Not Rewrite History
It is deeply unfortunate that during his own legal troubles years ago, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu openly advocated for fair treatment for Senator Kalu, only for him to now support the narrative used to imprison Kanu under a repealed law and transfer him to an unsafe detention facility.
Nevertheless, IPOB remains focused on justice, truth, and accountability—not political betrayal.
6. IPOB Reaffirms Its Commitment to Peaceful Self-Determination
Despite years of provocation, persecution, and targeted attacks:
IPOB has remained peaceful.
IPOB continues to operate within the framework of international law, particularly the UN Charter and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Our demand remains simple:
Allow a UN-supervised referendum so the people can decide their future democratically.
Until that happens, IPOB will continue to defend truth, promote peace, and expose falsehoods aimed at blackmailing our movement.
Conclusion
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu must provide evidence for his claims or withdraw them.
The deaths and insecurity in the South East are tragic realities—but their causes are political, governmental, and systemic, not the result of IPOB’s peaceful agitation.
