The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has welcomed the recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) by the United States government, describing the move as “a moral victory for justice, truth, and the sanctity of human life.”
In a statement signed by Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, the group praised U.S. officials including President Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz, as well as “patriotic Biafrans and friends of Biafra in the United States,” for their “relentless advocacy against religious persecution and state-sponsored violence in Nigeria.”
The statement also referenced a recent Canadian court ruling that reportedly designated Nigeria’s two major political parties — the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — as “terror-enabling organisations.”
> “This recognition is not merely symbolic; it represents a moral victory for justice, truth, and the sanctity of human life,” the statement read.
“By calling out the Nigerian state’s complicity in ethnic and religious violence, the international community has helped save countless lives that would otherwise have been lost to orchestrated insecurity and genocidal attacks,” IPOB said.
The pro-Biafra group, led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, however, noted that the global community’s work was not yet done. It called for an independent international inquiry into the “root causes of persistent ethno-religious killings and insecurity in Igboland,” urging global human rights bodies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
> “There remains an urgent need for an independent inquiry to unmask the perpetrators, financiers, and political enablers behind these heinous acts, and to ensure that justice is done in accordance with international human rights law,” the statement added.
IPOB also commended various advocacy groups, including the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) and Ambassadors for Self-Determination, for their “resilience and courage in confronting tyranny and impunity.”
> “History will remember your courage,” IPOB said, adding that the U.S. designation could bring relief to “long-suffering peoples of the Middle Belt region” and other persecuted communities across Nigeria.
The statement concluded by praising IPOB members and supporters for their continued commitment to peaceful self-determination:
> “Together, we have taken another step towards truth, justice, and the restoration of the dignity of all peoples trapped in this Lugardian contraption called Nigeria.”
