The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a soldier who was fatally attacked by a mentally unstable man on Sunday in the Imota–Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Naija News reports that a viral video shared on social media showed the deceased soldier lying in a pool of blood beside the attacker, who appeared in torn clothing. Some voices in the footage claimed the soldier had been shot with his own rifle.
However, the Army has dismissed that account.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, the military clarified that the soldier was not shot but was struck on the head with a heavy log.
According to Yahaya, the soldier was part of an internal security deployment in the area and had been attempting to calm a chaotic situation when he was attacked.
He said:
“Without prejudice to the ongoing investigation, it is necessary to provide preliminary information on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“On November 16, 2025, at about 4 p.m., a soldier deployed for internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, while attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation, was attacked by a mentally unstable individual. The attacker struck the soldier on the head with a heavy log, causing severe injury.”
The Army added that the situation was quickly contained by other troops at the scene.
“The situation was brought under control by other soldiers at the scene, who neutralised the attacker and recovered the soldier’s body,” the statement read.
The Division assured the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and determine further actions.
