The Zone Five Police Command has commenced the enforcement of the ban on the unauthorised use of sirens and tinted glass permits in Edo and Delta States.
The directive, announced in Abuja by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tijani Momoh, follows instructions from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, mandating nationwide compliance with existing laws regulating vehicle modifications and identification.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone Five, Salma-Dogo Garba, said the exercise would also cover restrictions on revolving lights, Police SPY and unallocated official number plates, as well as the use of unregistered vehicles.
Garba advised motorists with vehicles fitted with tinted glasses to apply for permits through the Police Permit Portal at www.possap.gov.ng, after which they must undergo physical verification at their state command headquarters.
“Those who are not desirous of obtaining the tinted glass permit are advised to remove such tints or replace factory-fitted glasses with transparent ones, as provided by the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act 2004,” Garba stated.
He stressed that the operation must be conducted professionally and warned officers against harassment or extortion of motorists. Any officer found guilty of misconduct, he said, would be sanctioned alongside their supervising officer.
The AIG urged residents to cooperate with the police and report any cases of unprofessional conduct to the nearest police station, the command’s Complaint Response Units (CRUs), or the Zonal Police Public Relations Office.
The enforcement is part of measures to strengthen public safety and national security. NAN reports that the Inspector-General had earlier directed that strict compliance with the Tinted Glass Permit Act will commence nationwide from Thursday.
