United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on all parties to fully adhere to the terms of the U.S.-backed Gaza peace agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, describing it as a vital step toward lasting peace in the region.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Guterres emphasized that the ceasefire must hold and humanitarian access to Gaza must be guaranteed.
“All hostages must be released in a dignified manner. A permanent ceasefire must be secured,” he said. “The suffering must end.”
The UN chief commended the diplomatic efforts of the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, which jointly brokered the first phase of the peace plan during talks in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
UN to Support Implementation and Reconstruction
Guterres pledged that the United Nations would support the full implementation of the agreement, assist with humanitarian relief, and contribute to reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
He urged both Israel and Hamas to seize what he called a “momentous opportunity” to revive a long-term political settlement based on the two-state solution, allowing Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully.
“The stakes have never been higher,” Guterres said. “This is the time to choose peace, justice, and coexistence.”
Background: A Fragile Step Toward Peace
The two-state solution envisions an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel. However, both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas have rejected such an outcome in their current positions.
The U.S.-backed agreement — the first of its kind since hostilities escalated last year — is expected to include staged hostage releases, phased troop withdrawals, and internationally monitored aid corridors into Gaza.
The coming weeks will test whether the fragile accord can lay the groundwork for a broader and more durable peace in one of the world’s most protracted conflicts.
