Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested three men for allegedly vandalising high-voltage power cables in Aninri Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Enugu.
According to Ndukwe, the suspects — identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28) — were intercepted by operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway on October 20, 2025, at about 4:48 a.m.
Items Recovered
The police said the suspects were found conveying lengths of vandalised aluminium cables concealed under cassava leaves in a white minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK.
Other recovered items included one large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a bag containing clothes, which the police said were used to disguise their illegal activities.
Suspects Confess
Ndukwe added that upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to vandalising the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma community and were transporting them to New Artisan Market, Enugu, where they planned to sell the stolen materials.
Police Vow to Clamp Down on Vandals
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to “fishing out vandals and other criminals bent on destroying and denying citizens the enjoyment of essential social amenities.”
“We call on members of the public to continue supporting the police with timely and useful information,” Giwa said.
Ndukwe noted that the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
