The Commander of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after gunmen ambushed him in Osogbo on Monday night.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Corps’ spokesperson, Abass Yusuf, made available to journalists on Tuesday in Osogbo.
According to the statement, the attack occurred around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel, Osogbo, while the commander was driving home alone after official duties.
Yusuf said the assailants opened fire on Omoyele’s vehicle, leaving it riddled with bullets.
“It is deeply troubling that the Amotekun commander could be targeted in such a coordinated and vicious manner,” Yusuf stated.
He added that shortly after the attack, about 15 armed men, all masked, reportedly stormed Omoyele’s private residence. Witnesses said the attackers arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV.
“The attack raises serious concerns about the rising insecurity even among those charged with protecting lives and property in the state,” the spokesperson said.
Yusuf urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt action.
“The attack is not just on one man but on the symbol of a localised security structure,” he added.
He further disclosed that Omoyele sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under protective watch.
The incident, he said, has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, while investigations are ongoing.
Emmynet24 News Media earlier reported that Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, recently ordered a full-scale investigation into the killing of some residents of Akinlalu community by Amotekun operatives and dispatched a government delegation to the area.
