The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather outlook forecasting thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of Nigeria between Monday and Wednesday, warning of potential flash floods in the northern and central regions.
The three-day forecast, released by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Sunday in Abuja, highlights the need for residents to remain cautious as the wet season intensifies.
Thunderstorms and Flood Risks in Northern Nigeria
According to NiMet, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina States on Monday morning.
Later in the day, rainfall activity is projected to extend to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States.
“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” NiMet stated.
The agency advised residents in these areas to avoid driving through flooded roads and to stay alert for possible disruptions in transportation and daily activities.
Central States to Experience Cloudy Mornings and Afternoon Showers
NiMet’s forecast shows that Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa will experience morning cloudiness, followed by light to moderate rainfall later in the day.
The agency further warned of a high risk of flooding in parts of Plateau State, urging residents in low-lying areas to take preventive measures.
“Communities in Plateau and neighbouring states should remain alert to potential flash floods and water accumulation,” NiMet added.
Persistent Rainfall in Southern Nigeria
For the southern region, NiMet predicted light to moderate rains across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States on Monday.
The agency explained that this rainfall pattern aligns with the ongoing peak of the wet season, which may persist through midweek.
By Tuesday, the northern region is expected to witness sunny intervals with patches of clouds, while Adamawa, Taraba, and neighbouring states will still experience localized thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, moderate rainfall will continue across central and southern regions.
On Wednesday, sunshine and thunderstorms are projected over northern states in the morning, while the central region remains cloudy with intermittent rainfall.
Southern states, including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, are expected to see morning showers followed by moderate to heavy rains later in the day.
Safety Advisory and Preparedness Tips
NiMet cautioned that heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods, urging residents in flood-prone areas to avoid driving during storms, secure outdoor items, and stay indoors during thunderstorms.
The agency also advised against seeking shelter under trees and recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during lightning activity.
Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for safe flight planning, while the general public was encouraged to follow NiMet’s official channels and website for daily forecasts and alerts.
