The family of the late labour activist and revolutionary, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, has agreed with the Labour Movement to postpone his burial to Thursday, October 23, 2025, in order to allow colleagues, comrades, and sympathisers ample time to organise a befitting farewell.

Aremu, aged 65, died on Sunday, October 12, 2025, after being hit by a vehicle near his residence in Ota, Ogun State. He was initially scheduled to be buried on Monday, October 13, but the Nigeria Labour Movement requested a brief postponement “by about two weeks” to ensure broad participation from across the country and beyond.

The announcement was made by Comrade Owei Lakemfa, a former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and former Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in a statement issued on Monday.

Burial Arrangements

According to the statement, the burial will now hold at No. 30 Kabiru Fatoye Street (Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop), Ifo Road, Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

Lakemfa expressed condolences on behalf of the labour movement, saying,

“Our hearts are with the dear family of our departed Comrade.”

He described Aremu as “one of the greatest revolutionaries and internationalists of our time,” adding that the late activist dedicated his life to workers’ rights, social justice, and international solidarity.

A Life Dedicated to Workers’ Liberation

Comrade Aremu was until his death the Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition that has been at the forefront of labour and civil society struggles for social and economic justice in Nigeria.

Lakemfa noted that Aremu made landmark contributions to the Nigerian and African labour movements.

“Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu joined the pantheon of revolutionaries on Sunday, October 12, 2025,” Lakemfa wrote.
“He was an inimitable leader of the working class in Nigeria who built enduring structures for collaboration and growth, including the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) and the Kolagbodi Memorial Foundation.”

Aremu also founded the Amílcar Cabral Ideological School Movement (ACIS-M), dedicated to training and conscientising young people to become agents of revolutionary change.

He served as Secretary of the Nigeria Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara and the Nigerian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, and was a recipient of the Friendship Medal from the Cuban government, awarded to distinguished internationalists for their solidarity and service.

Tributes and Legacy

Lakemfa described Aremu as a “fearless teacher and leader” whose intellectual and ideological contributions inspired a generation of activists across Africa.

“The greatest honour we can give our fearless teacher and leader,” he said, “is to continue in his footsteps and build a world founded on social justice.”

The Joint Action Front, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC) are expected to release further details about the burial programme and nationwide commemorative events in the coming days.
