A former Governor of Jigawa State and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lamido made the announcement on Monday via a post on his verified Facebook page, revealing plans to visit the PDP national secretariat in Abuja to purchase his nomination form.
“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman,” Lamido wrote.
He expressed determination to reposition the PDP for victory in future elections, describing his ambition as a continuation of his lifelong commitment to democracy and party unity.
“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable,” he added.
Context: PDP Set for Leadership Transition
The PDP, which governed Nigeria between 1999 and 2015, is preparing to elect a new set of national officers at its forthcoming Elective National Convention, scheduled to hold between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Lamido’s declaration comes amid internal divisions within the party following the endorsement of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus northern candidate for the chairmanship position by a section of northern PDP stakeholders.
However, factions aligned with Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, insisting that the process was not the outcome of broad consultation.
Party Leadership and Screening Process
At its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on August 25, 2025, in Abuja, the PDP resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while reserving the National Chairmanship slot for the North—a move aimed at balancing internal power rotation and maintaining equity within the party.
Ahead of the national convention, the PDP has constituted a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to vet all aspirants for national offices. The committee is chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former Ondo State governorship candidate and legal luminary, while the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, serves as Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee.
According to the party, the screening exercise will hold on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja.
Internal Tensions Ahead of 2027 Elections
Political analysts say Lamido’s entry into the race could reshape internal dynamics within the PDP as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections. His reputation as a founding member of the PDP and his history of strong grassroots mobilisation could influence both northern delegates and reformist blocs within the party.
Observers note that the contest for the national chairmanship is crucial, as the eventual winner will play a central role in determining the PDP’s strategic direction, reconciliation efforts, and national campaign structure in the run-up to 2027.
