Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed as “false propaganda” recent reports credited to the Department of State Services (DSS) on his client’s health condition.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Onyedikachi Ifedi, Esq., Kanu’s lawyer accused the DSS of concealing the true state of his client’s health while attempting to mislead the public through “friendly media outlets.”
According to the statement, despite being present during medical examinations, the DSS allegedly “introduced one Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, an individual with questionable credentials and no demonstrable competence in handling life-threatening cardiovascular conditions,” into Kanu’s treatment team.
The lawyer further queried why the DSS had allegedly flown Kanu’s blood samples to South Africa if, as it claims, “nothing is wrong” with him.
> “If indeed the DSS has nothing to hide, why has it refused to release the full and unedited test results for the world to see?” Ifedi asked.
“A security agency which does not even understand the clinical implications of aortic valve regurgitation or congestive heart failure has no business presuming to oversee the healthcare of a man whose life is already endangered by their reckless detention conditions.”
The statement alleged a pattern in which the DSS pressures doctors into “watering down their medical reports” to fit official narratives before the courts.
Calling for greater transparency, the lawyer challenged the DSS to convene an open press conference with independent journalists and medical experts who could interrogate their claims.
> “If the DSS is so confident in its position, it should subject itself to the disinfecting sunlight of public scrutiny,” the statement said.
The counsel also accused courts in Abuja of often siding with the security service, describing this as part of “a pattern of lies, concealment, and medical quackery” that must end.
The statement concluded by warning that Kanu’s life should not be treated as “a pawn in the DSS’s propaganda war,” and pledged to continue holding the security agency accountable before Nigerians and the international community.
