A political pressure group, the Ambode Comeback Crusaders, has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, as the party’s candidate in the 2027 governorship election.
In an open letter dated September 28 and addressed to the APC National Chairman and the Lagos State Chairman, the group’s convener, Abiodun Fashola, described Ambode as a “proven leader” whose tenure between 2015 and 2019 brought significant improvements in infrastructure, transportation, and healthcare.
Case for Ambode’s Return
The group praised Ambode’s financial expertise and governance style, crediting him with strengthening Lagos as a leading economic hub.
“His inclusive approach positioned him as a leader who listens to stakeholders and the populace,” the letter noted, while urging party leaders to weigh the “broader implications of Ambode’s second term.”
According to the group, reinstating Ambode would “propel Lagos into a new era of prosperity and innovation” and reinforce APC’s image as a party of progress.
Political Context
Ambode, a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, succeeded Babatunde Fashola as Lagos governor in 2015. However, he was denied a second-term ticket in 2019 after losing the APC primary to incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The letter was also copied to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and other party stakeholders.
What Next?
The APC is yet to officially respond to the appeal, but analysts say the development could reignite debates within the Lagos political establishment as the 2027 election approaches.
