No fewer than 6,382 athletes and officials will gather in Asaba, Delta State, for the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), scheduled to take place from August 29 to September 6.

The National Sports Commission (NSC), organisers of the event, confirmed the figure following the completion of the Digital Registration Management (DRM) process. Participants will represent all 36 states of the federation.

The Games, established to promote grassroots sports and discover the next generation of Nigerian champions, have steadily grown into a major fixture on the country’s sporting calendar.

This year’s edition will feature 37 sporting events, ranging from athletics and football to swimming and wrestling, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, teamwork, and determination.

Defending champions, Team Delta, will aim to retain their crown on home soil but face strong competition from equally determined contingents across the country.

According to the NSC, the Games represent more than just competition. “They are a celebration of talent, resilience, and national unity,” the Commission said, adding that nine days of thrilling action are expected to unearth the country’s future sports stars.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) notes that since its inception, the NYG has helped foster unity and serve as a springboard for young talents to rise to the national and international stage.
