Protesters Gather in Lagos for Independence Day Demonstration Against Hardship
Protesters assembled at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos State on Tuesday morning to mark Nigeria's 2024 Independence Day with calls for government action on pressing issues. The demonstration is being closely monitored by a substantial security presence, including police, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps officials, and personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Leading the police response is Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olanrewaju Ishola. Protesters are chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with messages such as “Reverse electricity tariff now,” “End all attacks on democratic rights,” “Reduce petrol price to N197 per litre; end scarcity,” and “Profit soars while people suffer.”
The protest is spearheaded by various civil society groups, including the Take It Back Movement, the Education Rights Campaign, the Coalition for Revolution, and the Socialist Workers League.
This protest marks the second such demonstration in two months, reflecting growing discontent among Nigerians regarding the country’s hardships. Dubbed #FearlessOctober1, organizers indicated that this event is a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1 to 10.
The groups emphasize that the demonstration arises from the Federal Government's failure to address key demands, including food insecurity, rising living costs, insecurity, government inefficiency, electoral reforms, and human capital development.
More photos from the protest are available.
