The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 26-year-old Nura Mas’ud from Mu’azu village in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire.
According to reports by The Punch Newspapers , the incident occurred after Muhammad expressed concern over her grandson's mental health and physical appearance, prompting Mas’ud to warn her to stop her inquiries. In a confessional audio statement, Mas’ud claimed he became frustrated with his grandmother's persistent questioning, which led him to douse her in petrol and ignite the flames.
Police spokesman Shiisu Lawan Adam confirmed the incident, stating that Mas’ud has been undergoing treatment for mental illness at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that he acted out of a delusional state. Tragically, Zuwaira Muhammad succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical care.
Lawan highlighted the importance of addressing mental health issues, noting that Mas’ud's condition had been previously documented. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
