Popular Blogger Meets Minister Amid Prison Administration Allegations
On Thursday, prominent blogger Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, met with the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following serious allegations regarding the integrity of prison administration in Lagos State. The minister has since ordered the suspension of several officers overseeing the Maximum and Minimum Custodial Centres in Kirikiri and other facilities.
This action follows a leaked audio recording shared by VeryDarkMan, which exposes alleged misconduct within the custodial system. In the recording, crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison, purportedly received unauthorized access to a private apartment outside the facility, raising concerns of corruption.
Reports suggest that Bobrisky paid bribes totaling ₦15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to dismiss money laundering charges against him.
VeryDarkMan expressed satisfaction with the minister’s swift action, sharing a video of their discussion on Facebook. He praised Tunji-Ojo for his commitment to addressing the situation and reaffirmed his support for efforts to improve Nigeria.
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky escalated when VeryDarkMan revealed that despite being sentenced in April, Bobrisky reportedly spent only three weeks in custody before negotiating an early release. Sources indicate that during his brief time in Kirikiri, Bobrisky received VIP treatment, including a private cell and heavy security.
An official confirmed that Bobrisky was "guarded like a president" and that his early departure was prearranged. The ongoing revelations have sparked widespread discussion about corruption within Nigeria's prison system.
