NSCDC Arrests Five Suspected Vandals in Abuja
Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) FCT Command have arrested five suspected vandals in two separate incidents in Abuja city center. The arrests were announced by spokesperson CSC Samuel Idoko on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
Two suspects, Suleiman Ibrahim, 17, and Abubakar Zakari, 22, both from Kano State, were apprehended near Wuse Market Bridge while carrying iron poles. They had reportedly vandalized these poles at the Arts and Culture Complex in Area 10, Garki, and were on their way to sell them. The suspects are cooperating with authorities, providing information to identify their buyers.
In another incident, three additional suspects—Aliyu Danladi, 37, from Kano State; Jamilu Abdulrahaman, 25, from Zamfara State; and Usman Ibrahim, 38, from Sokoto State—were arrested around Durumi 2 pantaker market. They were caught at midnight while attempting to move suspected stolen items. Preliminary investigations suggest they are part of a larger syndicate known for handling stolen goods.
Items recovered from the suspects include three electronic billboards, two solar batteries, a gas cylinder, a generator set, a refrigerator gas cylinder, and various tools. Investigators revealed that buyers frequently visit the market late at night to purchase stolen items.
FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu emphasized the need to regulate pantaker markets, which have become hotspots for the sale of vandalized and stolen goods. He stated that urgent action is necessary to curb vandalism and protect government infrastructure.
Ongoing investigations aim to ensure accountability for these crimes, as the NSCDC maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards vandalism.
