Nigeria's 64th Independence Anniversary to Be Celebrated Low-Key
Nigeria's 64th Independence Anniversary celebration will be low-key, according to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. Speaking at an inter-ministerial committee meeting and World Press Conference in Abuja on Thursday, Akume explained that President Bola Tinubu has requested a reserved celebration due to the current hardships faced by Nigerians.
He highlighted that rising transportation costs—stemming from the removal of the petrol subsidy and the devaluation of the naira—have led to significant inflation and economic difficulties. Despite efforts by federal and state governments to mitigate the effects of these policies, the relief has yet to reach the broader population effectively. The anniversary is themed “Reflection on the Past, Inspiring the Future.”
