Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has disclosed that during his tenure from 2007 to 2015, he mandated his aides and commissioners to join social clubs across Lagos State. The initiative was designed to ensure that government policies and activities were more accessible to the public and better understood.
Fashola made this revelation while speaking at the 50th-anniversary lecture of the Eko Club last Wednesday. He explained that the purpose behind this mandate was to promote better communication and understanding between the government and the people of Lagos through informal interactions.
“During our administration, I mandated my aides and commissioners to join social clubs in Lagos so they could gain insights and educate people about government policies wherever discussions were taking place,” Fashola stated.
Fashola, who also served as a former Minister and is currently a patron of the Eko Club, delivered his speech during a lecture titled, “The Role of Social Clubs in Social Engineering.”
Emphasizing Sports as a Tool for Employment
The former governor emphasized the significance of social clubs in fostering common interests and encouraged the Eko Club to rejuvenate its sporting activities. He pointed out that sports represent a major, yet underutilized, source of employment, particularly for youth in Nigeria who face high unemployment rates.
“Eko Club must return to its sporting objectives and lead the revival of youth inter-club competitions. We cannot rely solely on government efforts for the success of our athletes at international sports events,” he remarked.
A Call for Greater Public Engagement
As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Fashola urged the Eko Club to expand its role beyond being a social venue, emphasizing the need for the club to be more engaged in matters of public interest. He suggested that the club should take an active role in addressing societal challenges and shaping public discourse.
“It is my humble view that we have been somewhat detached from issues that affect our common interests. Eko Club is too significant and prestigious to be known merely as a venue for parties, anniversaries, and weddings, important as these may be to social engineering,” Fashola commented.
Planning for the Future
Fashola also encouraged the club members to focus on the future development of Eko Club, urging them to prioritize the next 50 years of growth rather than dwelling on past achievements.
