In a statement, Obono-Obla called for midterm elections to reform the APC leadership in Cross River State. He asserted that only the governorship election was conducted fairly, with the winner chosen through consensus. He alleged that all other elective tickets for national and state assemblies were manipulated and awarded to defectors.
Obono-Obla urged the APC to hold midterm congresses at state, local government, and ward levels to address these issues, citing deep divisions within the party following the 2021 defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He criticized the current APC leadership in Cross River State for being undemocratic and exclusive, accusing them of dominating party positions with PDP defectors.
In response, APC State Chairman Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba dismissed Obono-Obla’s claims as attempts to sow division within the party. Eba suggested that Obono-Obla’s frustration stemmed from his failure to secure federal and state appointments for himself and his associates.
