The Lagos State Government (LASG) has reaffirmed its decision to increase boarding fees in its model colleges, despite recent protests from parents.
Over the weekend, parents of students in these boarding schools staged demonstrations against the proposed fee hike. However, in a statement issued today, September 17, Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, defended the decision. Lawal emphasized that the increase is essential to ensure adequate care and maintenance of the boarding facilities.
Lawal pointed out that the current boarding fee of N35,000, which has been in place since 2021, is no longer sustainable given inflation and rising costs. Effective from the 2024/2025 session, the boarding fee will be raised to N100,000 per term, starting from the ongoing session that began on September 15, 2024.
Lawal acknowledged the concerns of parents but insisted that the increase was unavoidable to cover essential expenses such as food, janitorial services, and other hostel-related costs. He highlighted that boarding students represent just over one percent of the total student population in Lagos State’s public schools.
The government also stressed that despite the fee increase, students will continue to benefit from free education elements, including tuition, technology support, and security. Lawal argued that the revised fee remains reasonable compared to other schools nationwide, given the high cost of food and other necessities.
He urged parents to understand the necessity of the fee increase for the well-being of their children and to support the government’s efforts in maintaining quality education and care.
