Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Chief Abiri Godwin Abiri, emphasized that the tracking is part of the committee's legislative responsibilities to ensure compliance with budget provisions and promote accountability. He clarified that the exercise is not intended as a witch hunt but rather to enhance financial probity.
During the session, Chief Abiri expressed concerns about revenue leakages at the Margaret Umahi International Market in Abakaliki, directing the Commissioner for Market Development to implement measures to improve revenue collection.
He commended the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs. Nkechinyer Iyioku, for her effective management, which has led to successful distribution of farm inputs and training programs for women in modern agricultural practices.
Abiri also criticized the cleanliness of the International Market and parks, urging the Commissioner for Parks and Market Development to take swift action to prevent a cholera outbreak.
Several other lawmakers echoed the need for strict adherence to budget provisions and highlighted the importance of revitalizing the Ebonyi Fertilizer Chemical Company.
In her response, Commissioner Iyioku outlined her ministry's achievements and assured that expenditures align with budget expectations. Similarly, Prof. Agwu Nwogo, the Commissioner for Parks and Market Development, thanked the committee and committed to enhancing revenue supervision in the market.
