President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards making fuel more affordable for Nigerians by introducing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a new fuel option, priced at N230 per litre. This move aims to provide a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel, which have become costly since the fuel subsidy was removed.
To support the transition to CNG, President Tinubu has directed that one million free conversion kits be given to commercial vehicles, including those transporting passengers, food, and goods. The goal is to help drivers switch their vehicles to run on CNG, easing the financial burden on both transporters and everyday Nigerians.
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), created under the president's orders, is set to offer much-needed relief by lowering fuel costs across the country. With petrol prices now exceeding N900 per litre, the introduction of CNG couldn’t come at a better time.
According to a statement from Project Director Michael Oluwagbemi, the distribution of these conversion kits will take place over the next 18 months. "As part of this plan, the president has ordered that one million free CNG kits, along with free installation, be distributed nationwide. This will help the transport sector move quickly to cheaper fuel," Oluwagbemi explained.
The first phase of the initiative kicks off this week with the immediate distribution of 10,000 kits. These will be handed out to transport operators through partnerships with key groups, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Moove, UBER, and the Kaduna State Transport Authority (KSTA). By switching to CNG, drivers can lower their fuel costs and offer more affordable fares to the public.
The PCNGi is working with NIPCO Gas to handle the vehicle conversion process. NIPCO will run authorized centres across the country where the conversion and installation will take place, ensuring a smooth transition for vehicles.
The government’s target is to complete the distribution of all one million conversion kits by the end of 2025. This will fully equip the commercial transport sector to adopt CNG, reducing reliance on expensive petrol and diesel.
This initiative reflects President Tinubu's vision of a stronger, more stable Nigerian economy, where citizens have access to affordable energy solutions and sustainable fuel options.
