[BREAKING NEWS]: Federal Government Spends Over N1 Billion on First Lady’s Foreign Trips and Programs

The Federal Government has spent approximately N701 million over three months funding the foreign trips of the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, to five countries. According to GovSpend, a civic tech platform monitoring government expenditure, the total amount disbursed includes N77,659,888 for a trip to the United States, N149,794,284 for France, N202,386,198 for Mozambique, N144,571,785 for Ethiopia, and N126,295,377 for London.

In addition to these travel expenses, the government allocated N314,231,472 for six programs related to the First Lady’s initiatives over four months. This includes N131,921,786 for event decorations and N107,630,000 for multimedia services.

The total expenditure of N1,014,939,004 on the First Lady’s trips and programs over seven months was highlighted in a Punch report. This follows a 2023 allocation of N1.5 billion for vehicles for the Office of the First Lady, though former Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, argued that this budget was intended for the Presidency as a whole, not just the First Lady's office.

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership criticized the spending, noting that the First Lady’s office is not constitutionally recognized and therefore should not receive such funds. Debo Adeniran, Executive Director of CACOL, condemned the expenditure as a misappropriation of funds and criticized the National Assembly's oversight, urging Nigerians to demand accountability and adherence to constitutional principles.
