ASUU Sounds Alarm Over Departure of PhD Holders from Sa’adu Zungur University
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Bauchi is sounding the alarm about a troubling trend: 30 trained PhD holders are leaving Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), formerly Bauchi State University. Their departure highlights serious concerns over poor working conditions and inadequate support for staff.
During a press conference on Friday, Zonal Coordinator Namo Timothy shared the union's worries, emphasizing that many talented scholars feel forced to seek better opportunities elsewhere due to a lack of an exit policy. He pointed out that the absence of a pension and death benefit scheme leaves faculty members feeling insecure about their future.
The union also criticized the university’s administration for not paying over 650 million naira in outstanding entitlements, including academic allowances and honorariums. “Despite bringing in significant revenue from postgraduate programs, our members have not received fair compensation for their hard work,” Timothy remarked, stressing the need for change to retain valuable educators.
