Woman Arrested for Using Fake Currency to Buy Food in Osun State
The Osun Amotekun Corps has arrested a 30-year-old woman, Rebecca Ako, for allegedly using counterfeit currency to purchase food items in Ilesa.
Ako was paraded alongside other suspects by the Corps Commander, Dr. Adekunle Omoyele, on Tuesday in Osogbo, where they were accused of various offenses committed across Osun State.
According to the spokesperson for the Osun Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu, the suspect was apprehended at Sabo Market, Ilesa, attempting to use fake N1,000 notes to buy food items. During the interrogation, Rebecca Ako reportedly confessed to the crime, explaining that her financial struggles pushed her to engage in such illegal activities.
Dr. Omoyele revealed that the suspect claimed to have been introduced to the crime by a co-tenant after her husband abandoned her. In her own words, Ako said, “I am from Benue State and I live in Owenna. I used fake money to buy goods. There is a woman, Mrs. Elizabeth, that I used to live with when my husband left me. The woman later moved to Abuja and introduced me to using fake money.”
She further explained that Mrs. Elizabeth would send the counterfeit naira notes through dispatch. "When she gives me N100,000 in fake money, I would return N50,000 in original currency that I made from using the counterfeit notes before I was caught," Ako admitted.
The Osun Amotekun Corps has urged the public to be vigilant against counterfeit currency in circulation and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
