Dangote Cement Plc has unveiled a new Internship Scheme aimed at providing practical experience to engineering students from Nigerian tertiary institutions. The one-year, fully-funded internship program is designed to offer hands-on training to top-performing students in the field of engineering, starting with those from Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, and Kano Polytechnic.
Announcing the initiative, Lagos Regional Sales Director, Mr. Tunde Mabogunje, emphasized that the program is part of Dangote Cement’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. He noted that the internship will bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application, ensuring that students graduate as well-rounded professionals.
The program's initial phase will involve 20 students—10 each from Lagos and Kano—who were selected based on their academic excellence in Building Studies. These students will receive specialized training on the correct application of cement, particularly Dangote Cement, in line with standards set by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON). They will also be assigned to various construction sites, where Dangote Cement’s technical officers will oversee their work.
Mabogunje highlighted the importance of vocational and technical skills in the building sector and the broader economy, stressing that this internship is a crucial step towards addressing the skills gap in the industry. "As trainees gain practical field experience, they will be well-prepared to contribute significantly to the industry," he added.
The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, praised the initiative as a significant achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility. He expressed pride in Yaba College's selection as a pioneer institution for the program and assured that participating students would meet the scheme's objectives.
Dr. Abdul also mentioned ongoing collaborations between Yaba College and other organizations to enhance students' skills, and he invited Dangote Cement to participate in an Industry Advisory Committee the college plans to establish. He welcomed further partnerships with Dangote Cement, noting that such initiatives would ensure that students are well-equipped both academically and practically.
Speaking at the induction event, Dangote Cement’s National Sales Director, Funmi Sani, encouraged the selected students to make the most of the opportunity. He assured them that they would receive financial compensation throughout the internship period, aligning with Dangote Cement’s commitment to quality and excellence in both academic and practical skill development.
