Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting today, July 11, with representatives of organized labour to discuss a new minimum wage. The meeting, set to take place at the presidential villa, will include members of the tripartite committee.
The talks follow a nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which began on June 3 in response to a minimum wage dispute. The labour unions had initially proposed a new national minimum wage of N494,000, citing inflation and economic hardship, while rejecting the federal government’s offer of N60,000.
On June 7, the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) stated that a N60,000 minimum wage would be unsustainable. During the last meeting of the tripartite committee, organized labour rejected the government's revised offer of N62,000 and lowered their demand to N250,000.
Today's meeting aims to find a resolution that balances the needs of workers with the government's financial constraints. The outcome of these discussions is highly anticipated as the nation grapples with economic challenges.
