Fatal Accident on Nteje-Awka-Onitsha Expressway Claims One Life

One person has died in a tragic accident that occurred on the Nteje-Awka-Onitsha Expressway, near the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Unit Command in Anambra State, on Saturday, July 20, 2024.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collision involved a Toyota Camry, driven by Chinweuba Chidiebere, with registration number ABJ125JV, and a Ford Explorer with registration number ZBL626RL, driven by an unidentified individual. According to sources, Chidiebere lost control of his vehicle, veering into the lane of the Ford Explorer and resulting in a severe crash.

Margaret Onabe, the Acting Sector Public Education Officer for FRSC in Anambra State, confirmed the incident. She detailed that three male adults were involved in the crash. While one of the men tragically lost his life, the other two were rescued unharmed.

Onabe stated, “A fatal road traffic crash was recorded on July 20, 2024, opposite the FRSC Command Nteje, along the Nteje-Awka-Onitsha Expressway. A driver identified as Chinweuba Chidiebere, operating a private Toyota Camry with registration number ABJ125JV, collided with an unidentified driver of a private Ford Explorer, registration number ZBL626RL.”

She attributed the probable cause of the accident to Chidiebere's loss of control, which led to the crossover into the opposite lane and the ensuing crash.

The FRSC rescue team from RS5.3 Nteje promptly transported the deceased to Chira Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel. The body has been moved to the New Jerusalem Mortuary in Nteje.

Onabe also noted that the FRSC team managed the traffic situation and cleared the obstruction caused by the accident. Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander for Anambra State, extended his condolences to the victim’s family and urged motorists to remain vigilant and focused while driving, emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility.
