ABUJA, June 3, 2024 The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its participation in the nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The industrial action, which commenced today, is in response to the federal government's failure to meet the unions' minimum wage demands.

In a statement addressed to branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke instructed university lecturers across Nigeria to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.

"The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, June 3, 2024, as a result of the failure of the government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff," the statement read.

"Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress. Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action. Yours in the struggle."

The strike has significantly disrupted academic activities across universities, with ASUU members fully mobilized to support the broader labor movement's demands. The unions are pressing for a revised minimum wage and the reversal of recent increases in electricity tariffs, arguing that these are necessary steps to improve the living standards of Nigerian workers.

The federal government has yet to respond to the latest escalation, and the strike is expected to continue until the unions' demands are met.
