The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has outlined the advantages of its upcoming national identity card project, aimed at benefiting Nigerians.
The commission stressed that the new ID card is tailored to enhance financial inclusion and access to various social services.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the project, it hasn't been without its share of criticisms. Some have questioned the necessity and resource allocation towards the initiative, especially considering the ongoing challenges with the current National Identity Number (NIN) database.

Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, defended the initiative, describing the new ID card as a single, convenient, and multi-purpose card, eliminating the need for multiple cards. He assured a seamless process and emphasized the benefits it would bring to the country's populace.

Adegoke highlighted the versatility of the card, including its applications in financial transactions, government services, and travel. Collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System is underway to facilitate payment and financial services using the card.

Applicants will be required to register their NIN through various channels, including an online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks. The issuance process will align with existing protocols for debit/credit card issuance, with the option for pick-up at designated centers or delivery at an additional cost to applicants.
