Onu's political journey was marked by numerous milestones. He initially entered the political arena by contesting for a senatorial position in the former Imo State under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). Subsequently, he clinched the Governorship of Abia State in 1991, representing the National Republican Convention.

As the pioneer executive governor of Abia State, Onu also served as the chair of the Conference of Nigerian Elected Governors, demonstrating his leadership prowess. In 1999, he emerged as the presidential candidate for the All People’s Party, although he later deferred to Olu Falae after a party merger with the Alliance for Democracy.

Onu's influence extended beyond party lines. He chaired the All Nigerian People’s Party and played a pivotal role in the merger that culminated in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013.

In recognition of his contributions, Onu was appointed as Minister of Science and Technology by President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015. He was subsequently sworn in for another term on August 21, 2019, reaffirming his dedication to national development.

Ogbonnaya Onu leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to Nigeria. He is survived by his wife and children, leaving behind a void in the political landscape of the nation.
