CAF Awards 2023: Osimhen and Oshoala Aim for Historic Wins in Marrakech
The much-anticipated CAF Awards 2023 are set to take place at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco, today.
All attention is focused on Nigerian players Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala as they aspire to secure the top honors in the men's and women's categories.
In the Men's Player of the Year category, Osimhen is vying for the award alongside Morocco's Achraf Hakimi and Egypt's forward Mohamed Salah.
Osimhen, aged 24, aims to make history by becoming the first Nigerian to win this prestigious accolade since Nwankwo Kanu achieved the feat in 1999. His outstanding performance during the 2022/23 season with Napoli, where he contributed 26 goals in 32 league appearances and scored five goals in six UEFA Champions League matches, has heightened expectations.
Internationally, Osimhen also made a mark by scoring 10 goals in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.
Meanwhile, Barcelona Femeni's standout, Oshoala, is eyeing a remarkable sixth win in the Women's Player of the Year category, which would set a new record. She clinched her fifth crown in Rabat, Morocco, last year.
Additionally, Chiamaka Nnadozie, a teammate of Oshoala in the Super Falcons, is a finalist for the newly introduced Women's Goalkeeper of the Year award. Deborah Abiodun is also in contention for the Young Player of the Year title, and the Super Falcons are hopeful of securing the National Team of the Year award.
